Specifying the hdd?

How does stress determine which hard drive to use for the hdd test? When I tried adding --hdd 4 I got the following errors:

FAIL: ...mkstemp failed: Read-only file system

That seems to indicate that it didn't find the hard drive but was trying to run on the booted CD-ROM.

Suggestions?
