I would like to know about linux latest update, someone told me linux will be change their functionality. is it true or not?

i am looking in to getting linux but before i do i need to know all the stuff i need to download for it, will i get automatic updates like in microsoft, can i run micrsoft word, can i install games like battle field 2 and so on? plz let me know i would love to join the linux world if only i knew i bit more.
